Ibrahim Babangida, a former military Head of State, has stated that when someone assumes a leadership role as president, they should be seen as the most powerful human being created by God and they should view themselves as the leader of everyone in the country.
Babangida made this statement during his interview with Channels TV.
IBB, as he’s fondly addressed, also said that a leader should be seen as a powerful figure deserving of support, but at the same time, there should be mechanisms for holding the leader accountable if they make mistakes.
Babangida stressed the need for people to actively play their roles in supporting the leader, while also having the ability to criticize and impose sanctions if the leader fails in their responsibilities.
In his words:
“People should see the President as the most powerful human God created in this country. I think the realization of this gives you an awesome weight on your head. So he needs the support of the people, he needs the backing of the people and people should be able to say okay, this is the role we could play. And there should be sanction for failure anywhere that happens”.
