The Agege Community in Lagos will on Friday 3rd of February, 2023, begin the celebration of its decades of existence and achievements.
Tagged ‘Agege Day’, the weeklong activities will feature series of activities, from social to religious and cultural, educational and sports.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday morning at a parley within the Agege Local Government Secretariat premises, the chairman of the Agege Day Celebrations Committee who is the special adviser, Parastatals Monitoring Office (PMO) to the Lagos State governor, Hon Afolabi Ayantayo, said the celebrations encompass all aspects of the lives of the Agege people, adding that over the past century, Agege town has grown from an ancestral settlement to a cosmopolitan township, attracting settlers from within and outside the country, with estimated population standing at over a million people.
One of the highlights of the events, according to Ayantayo, will be the celebration of an Agege prominent son, Rt Hon Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa who is the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Ayantayo in his statement, affirmed Obasa as ‘the brand ambassador of Agege’, whose political sagacity, he said, attracted developmental projects to the community among which is the Pen Cinema Bridge and lots of road construction.
He, however, expressed appreciation to the state governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu “for improving on past administrations’ investments in various sectors of the social lives of the people of Agege”.
Programmes lined up for the weeklong events begins on Friday 3rd of February with a special Jumat Service at Markaz Central Mosque including awareness rallies across the community by artistes of various musical genres and theatre practitioners; a special Sunday service on the 5th; secondary schools debate on the 7th at Government College, Ipaja Road, Agege; cultural and traditional displays on the 9th at Agege Stadium and Miss Agege Beauty Pageant on the 10th at WAB Events Centre, Capitol Road, Agege.
On the 12th, novelty match will be played at Anwar’ul Islam Model College, Oniwaya Road, Agege, while on the 14th is the grand finale and launching of the N500 million Agege Educational Endowment Fund at Agege Stadium where Fuji music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall will thrill eminent guests expected to grace the occasion.
