Atleast three persons have been confirmed to have sustained serious burns when another gas exploded in Victoria Island Local Government, Lagos State.
It was gathered that the explosion that occurred at about 1 pm also damaged several vehicles and hotel room windows of Sheraton Hotel in Oniru axis were shattered by the blast.
It was learned that the explosion, which took many unaware, occurred within the premises of the hotel, leaving many to scamper for safety after the loud bang.
Confirming the explosion, General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, stressed that the situation has been brought under control by the emergency team.
Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that investigations conducted on arrival at the scene revealed that the gas cylinder used by welders working within the hotel premises was responsible for the explosion.
According to him, the explosion occurred due to leakage of one of the gas cylinder hose used by the welders while rehabilitating some parts of the hotel.
He said: “A total of three persons sustained severe injuries as a result of the blast and two has been rushed to Lagos Island General hospital for intensive care by the LASEMA Ambulance unit”.
The General Manager added that the third victim was rushed to a nearby private hospital for immediate medical attention.
“Aside the injured, several cars and hotel room windows were shattered as a result of flying objects after the blast. The situation is under control because a combined team of the LASEMA RESPONSE UNIT, Nigeria Police alongside Staff of the hotel are on ground to ensure a swift recovery. Recovery operation ongoing”.
